How to Use a Steel

  1. Hold the steel firmly in your hand with the guard positioned to stop the blade in case it slips.
  2. Hold the knife in your other hand and place on top part of steel.
  3. Raise back of blade 1/4 inch. Maintain this angle and constant pressure as you draw the blade across and down the length of the steel.
  4. Perform this in one continuous motion with the blade tip completing the stroke, passing off the steel near the guard.
  5. Repeat the same action under the steel for the other side of the blade. Always maintain the same pressure and angle on both sides of the steel.
  6. Repeat five or six times.
